120 VOTES DECIDE COUNCIL SERVICES FOR 90 000 WOKING RESIDENTS12.16.08pm BST (GMT +0100) Sat 16th Jun 2007 WOKING TURNS TORY WITH TWO NARROW WINS IN MAY'S ELECTIONS
Lib Dems won back Old Woking from Labour, but narrow wins by the Tories in Knaphill (45 vote majority) and Kingfield & Westfield (75 vote majority), took Woking Council from No Overall Control to a Tory majority for the first time in 15 years. Over 55% of the voters in Woking didn't vote. This silent majority gave the Tories a narrow win that will affect thousands of residents across Woking. Ignoring their narrow victory margin the Tories ride rough shod over the consensus politics that have served Woking well for the last 20 years. Forgetting their promises about this year's council tax and car park charges, they now promise 'jam tomorrow' - a nil increase for next year with no cuts in 'core' services. What counts as a core service and what changes aren't cuts remains to be seen! If the 'efficiency savings' are anything like those from the Tories at the County Council, residents can expect to see staff cuts, long delays in getting problems addressed and reduced support for those most in need. Just imagine for a moment the state of repair of our social housing if it was being maintained like our roads - horrifying! Your Liberal Democrat Councillors will speak up for those in need and show the real effects of the 'savings' planned by the Tories to buy themselves another two years in control. Horror-scope : Predictions for Tory Controlled Woking ? Cuts in council staff ? Delays for residents ? Reduced support for community centres ? Voluntary sector grants at risk ? Broken promises on development ? Health & well-being programmes reduced By Cllr Richard Sharp, Knaphill
