Woking Liberal Democrats: Working for Woking and Borough, All Year Round

STOP PRESS - LIB DEMS GAIN TWO COUNTY SEATS - SHOCK LOCAL TORIES

LIB DEMS 2ND IN WOKING EURO VOTE

Woking Lib Dems surprised the Tories by gaining two County seats - Woking Central and Woking South with huge majorities of 12% in each seat over the Tories! The Lib Dem majorities were 660 and 507 votes respectively. Mohammed Amin will now represent Woking Central and Will Forster will represent Woking South.

Lib Dems also held onto Knaphill with a majority of 13%. Diana Smith's majority was 515 votes.

Ken Howard came very close to upsetting the Tories in St Johns and Brookwood as well where he narrowly lost by just 63 votes.

Sadly we lost Horsell County Councillor John Doran to the Tories.

This leaves the tally of Woking County Councillors as follows: 3 Lib Dems and 4 Tories.

Labour were beaten into fourth place by UKIP in all County seats except for The Byfleets where they did not put up a candidate.

In the popular vote for Woking, the percentages were:

Tories - 44%

Lib Dems - 39%

UKIP - 12%

Labour - 5%

Total voter turnout in Woking was 42.93%.

This places the Lib Dems in a very strong position to win the General Election whenever it may be called.

LIB DEMS 2ND IN WOKING EURO VOTE

The Lib Dems came 2nd behind the Conservatives in Woking's European Election results beating UKIP well into 3rd place. Labour were pushed into an embarrassing 5th place behind the Green Party in 4th place. The Liberal Democrats retained their 2 MEPs in the South East. Sharon Bowles MEP is re-elected and Catherine Bearder is elected to the European Parliament for the first time. There was no change in the composition of parties from the South East. Conservatives retained 4 MEPs, UKIP retained 2 MEPs, Greens retained 1 MEP and Labour retained 1 MEP.

South East MEP Sharon Bowles (centre) and Euro candidate Catherine Bearder (3rd left) went on a "green" tour of Surrey recently. In Woking they met some of the Lib Dem County Council candidates. PPC Rosie Sharpley (kneeling at front) showed them the photovoltaic turbine powered street lighting. Their day finished with a tour round the Combined Heat and Power plant which supplies power for the Town Centre from a fuel cell.

Liberal Democrats want to protect and improve our environment while ensuring all Surrey's residents enjoy excellent services. It is disgraceful that Surrey's Children's Services were judged inadequate, and Surrey is a one-star authority overall.

We also want to see Surrey County Council giving value for money in everything that it does.

Liberal Democrat priorities are:

  • Repair roads and pavements properly. Woking has no major road maintenance scheduled this year.

  • More help for disabled people, old people, vulnerable children and their carers. More respite care and family support.

  • More activities for young people, to prevent boredom turning to antisocial behaviour among the badly-behaved minority. Youth Centres open when they are needed most, at evenings and weekends.

  • A greener Surrey - protect the green belt, no mass-burn incinerator in Surrey, better public transport, and improve food waste recycling.

In the last twelve years of Conservative control, badly managed contracts have led to botched or incomplete work. Stop-start recruitment and ineffective workforce planning mean vital posts can't be filled and have to be covered by agency staff. Millions of pounds were thrown away when plans to move County Hall to Woking were ditched.

Stop Surrey County Council's waste of money and resources. VOTE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT!

DIANA SMITH: "It's Time To Stop The Waste!"

Wed 29th Apr 2009

It's time to stop the waste of poorly managed projects, from waste on the roads like the ludicrously delayed pedestrian crossings in Knaphill and short-term patches on potholes that wear out long before the roads are mended properly, to the millions of pounds squandered through the last-minute failure to bring County Hall to Woking.

Lib Dems slam Government's Gurkha decision

Sun 26th Apr 2009

The Liberal Democrats have slammed the Government's decision on Gurkha settlement rights is as another huge betrayal of the Gurkhas who have served our country. Gurkha campaigners are sickened by the Government's new policy of extending automatic citizenship rights to those who served 20 years. The normal period of service for the majority of Gurkhas was 15 years.

"On issue after issue, the Liberal Democrats have led the fight for real change while the Conservatives lagged behind. On the economy, on the environment and now on the real reform of politics, it is the Lib Dems that are offering something different."
